Specialist Notes

Original edition. First printing copy or proof of this important work on ancient prophets, soothsayers, sibyls, etc. accompanied by beautiful engravings by Durant depicting the various characters framed in artistic allegorical frames (among others Mercury Trimegistus, Pythagoras, the Sibyl, Serapis etc.). Mussard was born in Geneva and was a Protestant theologian, exiled by the Calvinists because of his belief in universal salvation. In his works he attempted to establish the derivation of the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church from pagan sources. See Caillet p. 519 (Quoting the 1680 edition). Barbier II, 1272; Nardini, 324.
