Specialist Notes

Filippo Cluverio (Danzig, 1580 – Leiden, 31 December 1622 is considered the founder of historical geography. Previous scholars of this discipline, such as Giacomo Gastaldi and the Flemish Abramo Ortelio, had essentially worked as humanists, studying exclusively the classical texts, the epigraphic documents, etc. Cluverio instead largely availed himself of the observations made personally on the places. For this reason his works, and especially those on Italy and Sicily - to which Luca Holstenio, companion to the C. . in pilgrimages across our peninsula - they still consult with profit. C. has the merit of having first demonstrated how the reconstruction of the geographical conditions of past ages is not possible without the direct observation of present conditions.
