Specialist Notes

First state later the maps were separated and published individually by Joannes Janssonius. The two cards, designed by Gerardo Mercatore, are those inserted by Jodoco Hondio in his work and only here published together, in subsequent states they were re-engraved and published separately. Hondio, Flemish cartographer and engraver (1563-1612), settled in Amsterdam around 1593. In 1604 he purchased the plates of the Atlas from Mercator's heirs which he published in Amsterdam, in a new edition in two volumes, in 1606. It included, in addition to the 107 originals, 36 new cards and a completely new and more refined text, written by his brother-in-law Petrus Montanus.
