Title page printed in red and black, intaglio vignette on the title page, portrait of the author within an oval, beautiful frontispiece by Picart engraved by Folkema, out of text, at the beginning of each book, 24 plates full page, with caption at the bottom, 24 decorated headpieces, and 21 culs-de-lampe finely engraved on copper, woodcut drop caps and friezes, light uniform browning, sporadic blooms, worm holes on the external margins of the first leaves and on the internal ones of the late, coeval binding in full leather, spine with 6 bands, richly decorated compartments with phytomorphic motifs embossed in gold, red leather insert for the title, marbled cuts, worn corners, defects on the spine. Ex libris by Friederich von Wiss on the flyleaf.
Specialist Notes
First edition, of which 150 copies were printed in folio format. The engravings that accompany it are splendid, creations by Debrie, Dubourg, and Picart.
