Specialist Notes

Only first part complete by itself; the second contains works by Francisci à Scotten, Florimondo De Beaune and Johannis De Witt. Third Latin edition of Descartes' masterpiece, the founding work of analytical geometry and the birth of the geometry of coordinates. The first edition was published in French in 1637 together with his "Discours de la Méthode". It was partly ignored in the editions of "Discours", but when it appeared alone in the Latin translation (as here), which was aimed at a European audience, it also contained a commentary by van Schooten and a translation of the notes sent to Descartes by Florimond de Beaume, the invention of the analytic method spread to the learned world and thus revolutionized algebra and mechanics. “Geometry” has been defined by John Stuart Mill as "the greatest single step ever taken in the advancement of the exact sciences".
