Specialist Notes

FIRST EDITION of this very rich illustrated account of the feast of San Giovanni Battista on 23 June 1629 in Naples on the occasion of the celebrations for the seventh year of government of the Spanish viceroy Antonio Alvarez of Toledo (1585-1639), Duke of Alba. The task of planning the party was entrusted to the Neapolitan lawyer Francesco Antonio Scacciavento who, to enhance the qualities of the Duke, devised a program that revolved around the zodiacal themes: the squares and streets of the city lent themselves to suggest a sort of of the zodiac. The Duke of Alba and his retinue passed through 12 triumphal arches, each associated with a zodiac sign and each symbolizing a virtue.
