Strasbourg, J. Gothofredum Bauer, 1760. In .4°. Two parts in 1 vol. Noble coat of arms on the title page, with 7 engraved and folded plates, loose files, a detached plate, reddened and, coeval marbled hardcover binding, spine missing, worn. Ex libris of the Prince de Tayllerand on the backing.


Specialist Notes

First edition. of this important history of the dawn of printing based on documents (reproduced in facsimile in the 7 plates), in which the author presents the example of Gutenberg who had begun his experiments printing in Strasbourg. The documents were destroyed when the Prussians bombarded Strasbourg in 1870.
