Specialist Notes
"The masterpiece in book format by Renato Guttuso, printed in only 705 numbered copies (plus ten out of print). The artist had published several of these sketches on the pages of the «Unità», during 1944 , and the same had been exhibited at the summer exhibition "The art against barbarism", organized by the same Antonio Trombadori who signs the preface here. But the operation that succeeds with the "Gott mit Uns" is that of the artist's book : with Goya's memory of the «Désastres de la guerre», Guttuso creates a «savage series of drawings» in the words of the Australian writer Peter Robb, masterfully paginated to create a climax that progresses from the realistic approximation of the first black and white sketches saturating itself with color and distorted shapes, with a cartoonish flavor, which actually explodes on the cover, literally covered by a monstrous deformed soldier covered in blood-red on a blood-red background.
