With 18 copper plates engraved outside the text, 4 of which are folded, including the large view of Villa Torlonia depicting the raising of the obelisk in front of a large crowd of spectators drawn and engraved by Cottafavi, rare light flowering, tissue paper to protect the plates with blush, coeval binding in half red morocco with corners, in the center of plates the arms of the Torlonia family in gold, friezes and title on the smooth spine, some scratches and peeling, slight defects.
Rare original edition that tells of the raising of the two colossal pink granite monoliths quarried in Baveno and transported with onerous and complex organization to commemorate Giovanni and Anna Maria Torlonia, parents of Prince Alessandro Torlonia who commissioned the author. The publication traces the various phases of the enterprise, culminating in the public spectacle of the elevation of the two giants in the park of the villa. The luxurious publication, with all the pages stamped with the name Torlonia in watermark, was donated to the most important public and private libraries, in Italy and abroad. Graesse III, 33.
