Specialist Notes

Complete edition of what Cohen, p. 426, calls the "premier essai des Figures de l'histoire de France" engraved under the direction of Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. On his death, Moreau bought the plates and remade the figures of Lépicié and Monnet, presenting a series of engravings including the 112 he had signed for the first edition plus another 29 new ones. Of these, the present copy has 24 in the appendix (from n. 131 to n. 154). In total, therefore, the specimen of the collection has 168 engravings, all in first edition. Coat of arms on the plates of Prince Alexandre Lubomirski, a Polish nobleman born in Kiev in 1751 and died in 1804 in Vienna.
