Paris, Levrault, 1801. In the 8th. One-eye, with 1 copper plate engraved by Choffard, frieze on the title page, slight water gorge at the lower edge of the first cards, blooms, slight marginal reddening, contemporary green cardboard binding, title embossed in gold on the spine, slight defects.
Specialist Notes
Jacquille Delille (Aigueperse 1738 - Paris 1813), scholar and poet, soon became famous thanks to the success of his translation into verse of Virgil's Georgics . Voltaire himself intervened to get him to enter the Academie Francaise. His poems in a classical style of an idyllic and descriptive genre make him the most representative poet of the French eighteenth century praised and celebrated by his contemporaries, even outside the borders, as a refined but also very skilled and ingenious poet. The descriptive didactic poem Les jardins, ou dell'arte d'embellir les paysages had a great diffusion and marked the triumph of the scholar. Due to the French Revolution he was arrested and saved thanks to his friendship with the prosecutor of the Commune Chaumette. Upon returning from exile, under the Consulate, he was able to regain all his duties and privileges. & Nbsp;
