Rome, Giovanni Battista Bernabò and Giuseppe Lazzarini, 1746. In 4 °. Engraved copper vignette of Benedict XIV on the frontispiece printed in red and black, engraved initials, friezes and end pieces, slight restorations to the title page, binding of the period in calfskin, 5-ribbed spine with author and title stamped in gold, cuts gilded, peeling, detached front plate.

Specialist Notes

Second edition of a year after the original, of this work of great importance in the area of & nbsp; & nbsp; debate on usury in the eighteenth century. Maffei declared an interest on money loans lawful, becoming an advocate of the liberal theses typical of Protestant countries. He was immediately condemned by the ecclesiastical authorities. In this second edition Maffei took a softer position having Benedict XIV, the dedicatee of the work, in the meantime published the famous encyclical "Vix pervenit", which condemned the practice of usury.
