Florence, [Bernardo Giunta], 1547 [to colophon 1546]. In 8th. Typographic mark on the title page and on f12v, slight marginal blooms, binding in brown half leather and checkering of the 19th century. Evanescent ownership note on the title page, 17th century; another note by Alberto Bacchi della Lega, 1880, on the guard sheet.

Specialist Notes

Rare Italian translation of Dioscorides' important treatise on the materia medica, which is the main source of knowledge of therapy and pharmacology of the Roman era. The original in Greek appeared to Aldus Manutius in 1499. Dioscorides, a native of Cilicia, lived in the 1st century AD, was a military doctor following the Roman militias at the time of the emperors Claudius and Nero and traveled to various countries known at the time. The topics range from wine to saffron, from various types of oils to shellfish, from the blood of animals used in ointments to hemlock and mandrake to opium etc.
