Specialist Notes
Rare original edition. In the summer of 1779, while he was being treated in Abano, C. took up his pen and wrote this booklet. Dedicated to Doge Paolo Renier, this is a real pamphlet, in which the French writer, who died the previous year, but whose death was still very much regret, is harshly criticized. Casanova follows step by step the traditional praises read to the French Academy by his successor, Jean-François Ducis, and by its director, the Abbot of Radonvilliers, retorting them on every point with such animosity as to have the opposite effect. "Dans Casanova, la passion de la liberté, catalog de l'exposition, Paris, BNF, 2011, pp. 176-179.
