The imposing work, initially conceived in 10 volumes, collects meticulous observations on the life, habits and customs of the most varied species of insects, from a morphological, physiological and ecological point of view. The whole treatise is presented with clarity, lucidity and extreme precision. The work constitutes one of the pillars of entomology, used as a model for all subsequent similar works. The edition is accompanied by the explanatory and rich iconographic apparatus consisting of more than 200 folded copper plates, mostly engraved by Charles Simonneau.
