Specialist Notes

Original edition, printed a few months before the Amsterdam one. Cardinal Guido Bentivoglio (1579-1644), a nobleman from Bologna, a highly capable diplomat, was among other things Papal Nuncio in Flanders during the Thirty Years' War. Disciple of Galileo, due to pressure from the Vatican, he took part as an inquisitor in his trial in 1633. His Memoirs are documents of great historical importance. See Brunet, I, 778.
