Made of maru-gata iron, deeply hammered, tsuchimei, with three ko-sukashi (negative fretwork). Gold-inlaid engravings to represent the tendril, leaves and the flower. The motif represents a tendril with leaves and a single asagao flower (morning glory, from the convolvulus family), loved by the Japanese, which has the odd characteristic to bloom only in the morning.The concept of the single flower representing beauty dates back to the takonoma in which a single object of a certain specimen is always displayed. The tsuba belongs to the Shoami, one of the oldest school of Kyoto. Late Edo period, early 19th century. Provenance: Christie's London sale of 05/06/1998.
