Iron, gift tsuba, with a thick, carefully smoothed surface, decorated with three mon on one side and one on the other, three of which made of gold and one made of shakudo, hitsu ana of the Kogai blocked with scratched gold ategane. The mon are made of finely worked, high-relief applications, the shakudo one represents the Sangai matsu, a pine tree with three levels of branches, and the gold one a wisteria flower in the round. Both plants are widely used as noble coats of arms by many important families. The Kinko tsubako often worked on commission, and this tsuba proves it. It must have belonged to a set commissioned to celebrate a particular event for both families, probably a wedding. Late Edo period, circa 1850. Provenance: Naunton - Glendening Collection, London, 1965. The tsuba is mentioned in the Joly. Later Compton Collection, Christie's NY sale, 22/10/1992.
