Made of maru-gata iron, hira-zogan, with edge tapering outwards. The drawing depicts ginko leaves, cherry blossoms and tendrils all made of brass (missing parts), the veins underlined by fine kebori engravings. Late Muromachi period. In Yamashiro, at the end of the 16th century, a technique of wave-inlay (zogan) developed; the technique took its name from the town of Kyoto and was an inlay technique in which the material inserted (brass or silver) never exceeded the top line. The ginko leaves and the cherry blossoms are auspicious, and remind of spring. The tsuba belongs to the eldest Heianjo - Onin school. Provenance: Compton Collection, Christie's, NY sale. 22/10/1992.
