In her famous research on I travestiti (Transvestites), published by Essedi in 1972, Annalisa 'Lisetta' Carmi demonstrated her great ability to converse with her subjects, as she had previously done with the camalli in the harbour of her native Genoa. The sensitivity she acquired in her previous life as a pianist can be found in her private photographs, taken in interiors, as a sign of conquered complicity. The sometimes scornful rejection that accompanied the volume (four years after the fateful Sixty-Eight, by golly!) is surprising, when the photographer's lens had rested on these bodies with modesty and delicacy.
