At the end of the 19th century, photography broke into Japan thanks to the technical and cultural contribution of European authors such as Felice Beato. The great novelty of that revolutionary language is not opposed to, but merges with that of tradition. Photographers who had come from afar passed on information and techniques to their local assistants, and within a few years a veritable 'Yokoama School' was born, producing images of landscapes, natural visions, portraits, albumen prints always embellished with pictorial interventions that enriched the sepia-tinted black and white with vivid colours.
