Nella collezione di provenienza il dipinto è tradizionalmente attribuito a Michael Dahl (1659–1743). L'opera raffigura Mary Moncrieff, moglie di Sir Thomas Frederick (1680-1730), effigiata a figura intera, seduta, in un elegante vestito bianco e blu. La donna sorregge il ritratto del marito, scomparso nel 1730, data che viene a porsi come termine post quem per la realizzazione dell'opera. Sir Thomas Frederick era membro della famiglia Frederick di Burwood Park; figlio di Thomas Frederick (1650-1720) e Leonora Maresco, fu governatore della Compagnia delle Indie Orientali a Madras.
