The painting constitutes a preparatory sketch for the painting of the same subject in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, purchased together with The square of the Cathedral of Palermo. Both paintings in the Russian collection are attributed to the early 1850s and are larger than the lot offered here. Although the present composition differs in several aspects from the Hermitage canvas, particularly in the articulation of the spaces and in the distribution of the groups of figures, it is interesting to note that the time of day chosen for the representation is the same, as can be seen from the trend of shadows.
