The model
The Vitesse 6 was an "upmarket" version of the Herald, with which it shared much of the bodywork and mechanics. The differences concerned the front with 4 round headlights, different engine hood and new grille, the interiors with wooden inserts also on the door panels, better shaped seats and the engine: a 6-cylinder in-line with lateral camshaft, Standard derivated. Obviously the design was the work of Giovanni Michelotti, also the designer of the more basic Herald. From a technical point of view, in addition to the 70 hp 1596 cc 6-cylinder engine, fed by 2 carburettors, the differences compared to the Herald essentially concerned the reinforced front end, to support the greater weight of the engine, and the front disc brakes. From its launch in 1962, the Vitesse was available in both 2-door sedan and Convertible versions. The success of the model, thanks to the refined finish and the competitive price compared to other 6 cylinders, was remarkable, despite the rather unexciting performance. In 1966 Triumph increased the displacement to 1998 cc. In 1968 the British manufacturer made further changes to the Vitesse, with substantial modifications to the rear suspension and a new engine. Production of both the sedan and the Convertible ceased in 1971.
The car
The Triumph Vitesse 6, chassis no. HB 9019 LDL is a two-door saloon model from 1964. Light blue with blue leather interior. Bodywork and seats have been restored. Part of the interior is preserved. The mechanics, preserved, are in working order. It still has its original black plates (Brescia) and (pages) logbook. The car had only one owner, in its first 4 years of life, till 1968; when it became part of the Saottini Collection where it has remained for over 50 years. In excellent general condition, it requires some care for the restoration of the front seat padding and some details. In the past, the Vitesse 6 has been somewhat forgotten so, today, this model has become rare and is becoming increasingly sought after. It is considered reliable and is eligible for many classic car competitions.
