The battle of the Hermada, or Monte Querceto, is part of the battle on the Isonzo, whose objective was the conquest of Trieste. Bloody battles on several occasions ended with the retreat of the Italian troops, culminating in the defeat of Caporetto. The artist from Teramo depicts the main phases of the fighting in the three panels: on the left the approach under the protection of the night, in the center the actual battle, with the soldiers in the trenches, while the right panel shows the transport of the last wounded, with the trenches now abandoned. The overall result is a condensed and effective account of this fundamental episode of the First World War, in which heroism and lyricism are visually united by the profile of the Hermada.
