Specialist Notes

Still an elusive figure, the painter Sofia Grancini was enrolled at the Brera Academy between 1885 and 1886 when she won the honorable mention as well as in 1891-92 when she obtained another honorable mention for the figure drawing school. From the registers of the same Milanese institution, she took leave with a rich cursus honorum in 1894.
We find her, unexpectedly, with a work at the Civic Museum of Macerata, a tempera painting typical of the fin de siècle taste following Scrosati and Hayez.
At present, this represented all we knew about her, until, on the occasion of this auction, this splendid Odalisque appeared.
Styled according to the canons of the Braidense school, evidently a pupil of the painter Bertini and of the Scapigliati connected to it (Cremona, Ranzoni but also a certain boldness of Tallone), demonstrates a mature painter capable of mixing even the brightest colors with great awareness of means.
This important discovery will give rise to the rediscovery, we are certain, of a painter who deserves to be removed from oblivion.
