Born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1886 to a wealthy family, Virginia Tomescu moved to Paris at the age of 17 to study at the famous Académie Julian, founded by the painter Rodolphe Julian. During a trip to Italy with her mother she was so fascinated by the beautiful country that she moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
Her training therefore appears divided between France and Italy but still characterized by great brightness, solid volume and preference for painting en plein air. Married in 1915 to an Italian doctor and added to her surname Scrocco, thus sanctioning her definitive link with Italy, she settled in Tivoli. Here she devoted herself entirely to her activity as a painter, dividing herself between monumental peasant subjects, elegant female figures and airy landscapes, all united by a happy freshness of color.
Between the twenties and thirties she reached artistic maturity, culminating in in various collective and individual exhibitions in Italy and Romania, starting with the exhibitions of the Roman Secessione (1915) and of the Società degli Amatori e Cultoriof Rome (1916 and 1918 ). Her fame is such that in 1929 Queen Marie of Romania commissioned her to decorate a castle in Transylvania. Virginia Tomescu Scrocco dies in Tivoli in 1950.
