Augustin-Théophile Quantinet studies architecture at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where it achieves several awards. In 1820 he arrived in Rome as a "logist" at the Académie de France to participate in a competition, where he won the Second Grand Prix. He resigned from the École and began traveling around Italy, with long stays in Rome. The longest period of stay is in 1821, when he resides in Via Gregoriana in the house occupied until the year before by Ingres. Returning to Paris in 1824, he remained in contact with Rome thanks to various acquaintances linked to the Académie de France and to artists such as Louis-Léopold Robert and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. His architectural studies are both fascinating historical documentation and a tribute to the masters of Roman Renaissance architecture.
