Information

dating: 1875-1890 provenance: USA, 6-1/2' rifled, cylindrical, 44 cal. Russian barrel with two-line marking on the rib featuring patents up to 1877, company address, and 'REISSUE JULY 25 1871'. Clean bore, visible rifling. Six-shot cylinder. Good working mechanism. It keeps about 65% antique blueing. Coeval '271xx' serial number on barrel, barrel latch and grip, only faint traces of uninterpretable numbering visible on the cylinder. Checkered wooden grip scales. This is most likely one of the models intended for the Japanese Navy. The second order of 8754 items placed by Takata & Co. in about 1880-90. Items in this order were standard with a 6-1/2-inch barrel, blue finishing and wooden grip scales, the mark they most frequently had was a simple anchor on the bottom of the grip (Tokoyama Base). They also often had cylinders with irrelevant numbering (which does not, however, lower their value). Serial numbers between 27018 and 27300 were shipped to Takata in 1891. All these features are present on the valuable model we present. See 'Standerd Catalogue of Smith & Wesson' 3rd Edition by Supica/Nahals, pp. 102-105 length 29,5 cm.
